As animal lovers and caregivers it’s only natural to dread the thought of losing a pet. We know, consciously, that these animals are precious gifts which are time sensitive. However, do we ever stop to consider that our animals grieve when they lose one of their own? Whether it be house pets, or a barn environment, when animals lose other animal companions the effects can be profound on them and their environment altered.
Just this week, a client requested that I speak to their feline who had recently experienced the loss of a fellow cat. I also spoke with a dog who had just lost another dog. While many of their responses were similar, they did, in fact, express their own individual responses. Some of the responses I have encountered from grieving animals include the animal expressing “reverence” for the friend who has passed. Often, they show me light like that which might be hitting a window on a sunny day.
We may see animals behaving in a way that on the surface appears to be less intuitive or spiritual. They might be “looking” for the animal who is no longer with them. In many ways, animals respond to loss like humans. I know that when I lost my dog Meesha in 2013, I felt peace because I knew she was in a better place, but the pain from the burden of our separation was tough-many times, I hoped to find her resting in her favorite spot in the house. Loss is an adjustment that takes time to heal and no doubt, it’s the same for animals.
How can we help our animals through the grieving process? By acknowledging their feelings, we are truly honoring them. When loss is sudden, as in the case of humans, it may take some time to sink in and this also true for our pets. Through clear communication, we can help our animals to make a full connection with what has happened.
We must lend support to our animals when they are mourning as often times, they are the first to support us in our times of lose.

Animal Massage Success Story!
Harley really enjoyed his massage with you the other night. I think the massage helped him with his arthritis in his spine. There was an improvement in the way he moved around afterwards and all his muscles and joints be more flexible. Harley can’t wait until his next massage! Thank you for being so knowledgeable and gentle with him! -Randolph, NJ
