I asked my 86-year-old friend what she has found to be one of the most important things that she has learned in life? Her response was, “Treat people with kindness and respect and you will get love back.”
The same is true for the amazing gift of love that we can receive by taking the time to demonstrate kindness and respect by communicating with the animals. I have been “re-captivated” this week by “Koko” the gorilla. Francine “Penny” Patterson, Ph.D., taught Hanibiko “Koko,” the western lowland gorilla, over 1000 hand signs based upon American Sign Language. The sweet nature of this large being is so beautiful, it makes me want to hop a flight to San Francisco to visit the Gorilla Foundation where she resides with a male gorilla named Ndume.
Koko has been reported to demonstrate the ability to comprehend several higher level concepts such as loss and death, self-cognition, as well as understanding meta-language (the ability to use language to speak about language itself). It is touching to watch how Koko cares for tiny kittens, adopting them as her “babies.”
The love and time that Dr. Patterson has given to teach Koko to communicate is remarkable and a strong reminder of how blessed by an animal’s love we can be if we take the time to understand them.
