Hypnosis FAQs - Learn more about how hypnosis works

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Research suggests that while the level of hypnotizability varies among individuals, most people can achieve some degree of hypnosis.

Is hypnosis real or just a placebo?

Hypnosis is indeed a real phenomenon with documented effects on the brain and behavior. While it shares some similarities with the placebo effect, it operates independently. Hypnosis involves a focused state of consciousness and can lead to tangible changes in perception, sensation, and behavior, often extending beyond the scope of the placebo response. However, the effectiveness of hypnosis can vary among individuals, and its mechanisms are still not fully understood, which has led to some debate and misconceptions about its nature.

What are the potential benefits of hypnosis?

Hypnosis is used for a wide range of purposes, including pain management, stress reduction, habit change, and improving performance in various fields. Working with a trained and qualified hypnotist is essential to guide you through the process and tailor suggestions to your specific goals and needs.

Are there any risks or side effects of hypnosis?

Hypnosis is generally considered safe when conducted by a trained and qualified professional. However, it does come with some potential risks and side effects, though they are relatively rare. Here are some considerations:

  1. False Memories: In some cases, hypnosis might lead to the formation of false memories, where individuals believe they experienced something that didn’t actually occur. This is more likely in suggestive or leading questioning during hypnosis.

  2. Emotional Intensity: Although rare, hypnosis can bring up strong emotions. This can be discussed and managed with a well-trained professional.

  3. Headache and Fatigue: Some individuals might experience mild headaches or fatigue after a hypnosis session.

  4. Temporary Confusion: After a session, a person might feel momentarily disoriented or confused. This usually dissipates quickly.

  5. DepersonalizationRarely, a person may experience a sense of detachment from themselves or reality during or after hypnosis. This is usually temporary but should be reported to the practitioner.

  6. Worsening of Symptoms: In very rare cases, hypnosis could potentially worsen certain psychological conditions, especially if used inappropriately or without proper assessment.

It’s crucial to choose a qualified and reputable hypnotist who follows ethical guidelines. They should conduct a thorough assessment and ensure that hypnosis is a suitable option for your specific needs. Additionally, always discuss any concerns or potential side effects with your coach, and if you experience any adverse effects, report them promptly.

Can hypnosis be done remotely?

Certainly! Absolutely, remote hypnosis sessions can be equally as effective as in-person ones. The added advantage is that you can experience deep relaxation right from the comfort of your own home, where you might feel more at ease entering a hypnotic state. Many of my clients have achieved remarkable results through online sessions. All that’s required is a device with an internet connection!

What's the difference between Integrative Coaching and therapy?

While Integrative Coaching and therapy can be instrumental in helping individuals lead happier, more fulfilling lives, they differ in their approaches and objectives.

Purpose and Focus:

Integrative Coaching primarily focuses on the present and future. Coaches work with clients to set and achieve specific goals, improve their overall quality of life, and unleash their full potential. Coaches empower individuals to identify and overcome obstacles, develop effective strategies, and maintain accountability for their actions.

Therapy, also known as counseling or psychotherapy, often delves into the past to understand and address emotional, psychological, or behavioral issues. It includes delving into underlying mental health concerns. Therapists help individuals manage and alleviate symptoms related to mental health disorders.

Client Needs:

Integrative Coaching clients are typically individuals who are looking to enhance their personal or professional lives, boost their motivation, or achieve specific objectives. They may seek guidance with career advancement, relationship improvement, time management, or personal development.

Therapists work with clients to address and manage emotional and psychological difficulties that may be hindering their overall well-being.

Duration and Structure:

Integrative Coaching sessions are typically shorter over time and more goal-oriented. Clients work with coaches for a set, often ranging from a few weeks to several months. However, depending on the modality, the client may return occasionally for additional work on new goals.

Therapy sessions are often open-ended and can continue for an extended period, sometimes years. The therapeutic relationship is based on exploring and resolving complex psychological issues, which may require more time and a deeper commitment.

Techniques and Approaches:

Life coaches employ a range of strategies and techniques to help clients set and achieve goals. These may include active listening, brainstorming, action planning, and accountability checks. Coaches often adopt a forward-looking and solution-focused approach.

Therapists use various therapeutic modalities and techniques tailored to the client’s specific needs.

Conclusion:

Integrative Coaching and therapy serve different purposes and cater to distinct needs, but both can be invaluable in promoting personal growth and well-being. Your choice between the two should align with your goals and the challenges you’re facing.

Whether you’re seeking to achieve specific objectives or work through deeper emotional issues, both Integrative Coaching and therapy offer valuable support on your journey to becoming the best version of yourself.

Do I have to be free of a mental health diagnosis or not in therapy?

Clients with a mental health diagnosis can benefit from coaching if they can make progress towards their goals while managing symptoms.

If you choose to work with me, I’ll ask whether or not you’re seeing a therapist (or other healing practitioners), and it’s your choice whether or not to disclose. If you like, or if it seems important during our coaching relationship, you can give me written permission to connect with your therapist, but this is voluntary.

If you express or imply an intent to harm yourself or others, I must report this to the proper authorities.

Coaches sometimes refer clients to other professionals for issues better suited to a clinical therapeutic relationship. Coaching can be an excellent complement to therapy!

I have a coaching style and specialized experience that allows for deeper work than some other coaches.

My training in somatic (body-focused) modalities, Brainspotting and Hypnosis, and parts work (based on Internal Family Systems) enables me to do deep, ethical, trauma-informed work if that feels like a fit or would support our work together.
