Brainspotting

"Where you look affects how you feel"

Have you ever felt that your brain sabotages your plans by reminding you of a past mistake, a wrong decision, or a physical setback that has ruined your chances for success?

Or feeling frozen during critical moments? Or do you feel like a single loss has invalidated your previous victories

If so, could I ask you to try this brief exercise?

Envision something that fills your heart with happiness, whether it be unwinding on a sandy shore admiring the affectionate gaze of a cherished human or animal, or strolling at a comfortable pace along a beautiful nature trail.

Notice how you feel.

Now, take notice in what direction your eyes are looking?

Now, begin to bring to your mind something you dislike, such as a specific food or the memory of a movie you found to be a waste of time or boring.

Notice how you feel.

Take notice in what direction your eyes are looking?

Note any difference between the direction your eyes between the positive vs. the more negative thoughts?

What makes Brainspotting different?

Brainspotting FAQs - How does Brainspotting work?

How does Brainspotting work?

Brainspotting works by directing the client’s attention to specific eye positions or “brainspots” that are associated with difficult experiences. This reaches the deeper part of the brain (including the subcortical parts of the brain including the amygdala and brainstem) and body (autonomic and limbic systems within the body’s central nervous system).

What are the potential benefits of Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is used for a wide range of purposes, including stress reduction, habit change, and improving performance in various fields.

Brainspotting can help to increase confidence, and shift out of fear, doubt, confusion, and overwhelm

Is Brainspotting real or just a placebo?

Yes, there is a growing body of research supporting the effectiveness of Brainspotting. Many studies have shown positive outcomes.

.

Can Brainspotting be done remotely?

Certainly! Absolutely, remote Brainspotting sessions can be equally as effective as in-person ones. The added advantage is that you can experience deep relaxation right from the comfort of your own home, where you might feel more at ease. Many of my clients have achieved remarkable results through online sessions. All that’s required is a device with an internet connection!

Are there any risks or side effects of Brainspotting?

Hypnosis is generally considered safe when conducted by a trained and qualified professional. However, it does come with some potential risks and side effects, though they are relatively rare. Here are some considerations:

  1. Emotional Intensity: Although rare, Brainspotting can bring up strong emotions. This can be discussed and managed with a well-trained professional.

  2. Headache and Fatigue: Some individuals might experience mild headaches or fatigue after a hypnosis session.

  3. Temporary Confusion: After a session, a person might feel momentarily disoriented or confused. This usually dissipates quickly.

  4. Depersonalization Rarely, a person may experience a sense of detachment from themselves or reality during or after hypnosis. This is usually temporary but should be reported to the practitioner.

  5. Worsening of Symptoms: In very rare cases, hypnosis could potentially worsen certain psychological conditions, especially if used inappropriately or without proper assessment.

It’s crucial to choose a qualified and reputable Brainspotting coach who follows ethical guidelines.

They should conduct a thorough assessment and ensure that Brainspotting is a suitable option for your specific needs.

Additionally, always discuss any concerns or potential side effects with your coach, and if you experience any adverse effects, report them promptly.

How long does a typical Brainspotting session last?

An intake appointment will generally last up to 90-120 minutes.

Subsequent appointments last 60-90 minutes and are tailored to your needs.

Is Brainspotting the same as EMDR?

Brainspotting and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) are both effective methods for shift out of fear, doubt, confusion and overwhelm but they have different techniques. While EMDR uses eye movements, Brainspotting focuses on fixed eye positions.

Do I have to be free of a mental health diagnosis or not in therapy?

Clients with a mental health diagnosis can benefit from coaching if they can make progress towards their goals while managing symptoms.

If you choose to work with me, I’ll ask whether or not you’re seeing a therapist (or other healing practitioners), and it’s your choice whether or not to disclose. If you like, or if it seems important during our coaching relationship, you can give me written permission to connect with your therapist, but this is voluntary.

If you express or imply an intent to harm yourself or others, I must report this to the proper authorities.

Coaches sometimes refer clients to other professionals for issues better suited to a clinical therapeutic relationship. Coaching can be an excellent complement to therapy!

I have a coaching style and specialized experience that allows for deeper work than some other coaches.

My training in somatic (body-focused) modalities, Brainspotting and Hypnosis, and parts work (based on Internal Family Systems) enables me to do deep, ethical, trauma-informed work if that feels like a fit or would support our work together.

What's the difference between Integrative Coaching and therapy?

While Integrative Coaching and therapy can be instrumental in helping individuals lead happier, more fulfilling lives, they differ in their approaches and objectives.

Purpose and Focus:

Integrative Coaching primarily focuses on the present and future. Coaches work with clients to set and achieve specific goals, improve their overall quality of life, and unleash their full potential. Coaches empower individuals to identify and overcome obstacles, develop effective strategies, and maintain accountability for their actions.

Therapy, also known as counseling or psychotherapy, often delves into the past to understand and address emotional, psychological, or behavioral issues. It includes delving into underlying mental health concerns. Therapists help individuals manage and alleviate symptoms related to mental health disorders.

Client Needs:

Integrative Coaching clients are typically individuals who are looking to enhance their personal or professional lives, boost their motivation, or achieve specific objectives. They may seek guidance with career advancement, relationship improvement, time management, or personal development.

Therapists work with clients to address and manage emotional and psychological difficulties that may be hindering their overall well-being.

Duration and Structure:

Integrative Coaching sessions are typically shorter over time and more goal-oriented. Clients work with coaches for a set, often ranging from a few weeks to several months. However, depending on the modality, the client may return occasionally for additional work on new goals.

Therapy sessions are often open-ended and can continue for an extended period, sometimes years. The therapeutic relationship is based on exploring and resolving complex psychological issues, which may require more time and a deeper commitment.

Techniques and Approaches:

Life coaches employ a range of strategies and techniques to help clients set and achieve goals. These may include active listening, brainstorming, action planning, and accountability checks. Coaches often adopt a forward-looking and solution-focused approach.

Therapists use various therapeutic modalities and techniques tailored to the client’s specific needs.

Conclusion:

Integrative Coaching and therapy serve different purposes and cater to distinct needs, but both can be invaluable in promoting personal growth and well-being. Your choice between the two should align with your goals and the challenges you’re facing. Whether you’re seeking to achieve specific objectives or work through deeper emotional issues, both Integrative Coaching and therapy offer valuable support on your journey to becoming the best version of yourself.
